Lake Management Planning in the City of Kawartha Lakes

Early Actions

What takes place on the land that drains to a lake is often mirrored in the water. This means everyone in the watershed has a role in protecting the lake, and the creeks and river that drain to it.

We can each do our part by using best management practices at home, at work and at play. Here are some resources to help you get started.

In town

Contaminants on your lawn, driveway or road can wash into the ditch and storm sewer. Help keep fertilizer, pet waste, soil, and grass clippings from entering the lake with runoff. Encourage your neighbours to do the same.

In the country

Prevent valuable nutrients from washing into ditches and streams by using buffer strips and vegetation. Incorporate fertilizer or manure applications promptly so nutrients are not carried away by runoff (avoid spreading on frozen ground). Restrict livestock from ditches, streams or watercourses.

Along the shoreline

Native plants along shorelines help keep nutrients from reaching the lake, while creating wildlife habitat. They also deter Canada geese, which contribute to E-coli in the water, and reduce water temperature, which helps reduce E-coli.
