Land Donations
Protecting ecosystem services and the natural environment for generations to come
We depend on a healthy natural environment to provide a wide range of ecosystem services, such as improving water quality, recharging groundwater aquifers that supply water to wells and creeks, reducing the risk of flooding and erosion, and maintaining biodiversity.
Kawartha Conservation owns and protects 728 hectares (1,800 acres) locally that provide these ecosystem services. Private landowners have donated much of this land. In addition, we protect 444 hectares (1,095) acres) on behalf of the Nature Conservancy of Canada and Ontario Heritage Trust.
Donating land is an excellent way to ensure a healthy environment for generations to come. We regularly receive offers of land donations; however, are unable to accept all offers. Our land securement policy provides us with direction as to priorities for securement. Specifically, we will consider donations with three or more of the following features:
- Provincially/Regionally Significant Wetland
- Environmentally Significant Area or Significant Features
- Significant Fisheries Habitat
- Oak Ridges Moraine property designated under the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan as Natural Core Area, Natural Linkage Area, or Countryside Area
- Significant Wildlife Habitat
- Provincially/Regionally Significant Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI - Earth and Life Science)
- Significant Vegetation Community/ Community Forest Cover
- Significant Water Resources (e.g. headwaters, floodplain)
- Property within areas identified in a master plan or strategy, and approved by the Kawartha Conservation Board of Directors
- Adding to, or filling out, an existing Kawartha Conservation land holding
- Land that will improve access to existing Kawartha Conservation property
- Land identified with forest management potential
- Land identified with public outdoor recreation opportunities that relate to Kawartha Conservation’s mandate.
