Under Construction: Howler's Corners off-leash dog park in Ken Reid Conservation Area
Like many Friends members, many people visit conservation lands to walk their dogs in a beautiful natural setting. However, leashes are required by law in order to protect sensitive natural features, wildlife and the safety of other visitors.
Working in partnership with the John Howard Society of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton, we are developing a top-notch, off-leash facility that people and their dogs will enjoy using.
Plans involve the installation of fencing around an unused area that is about 3 acres, located near the main parking lot across from the Kawartha Conservation Administrative Centre. This will include a calming area for when excited dogs first arrive, a separate area, if needed, for older dogs or to protect smaller dogs or puppies. We are also investigating the feasibility of pet waste composters and will be seeking corporate sponsors from the community.
Please see the map below for the location within Ken Reid Conservation Area.

We need your support!
Donations are most welcome, and can be made online or by cheque at the Kawartha Conservation Administrative Centre in Ken Reid Conservation Area. A membership to Friends can also be obtained and will help support the creation of the dog park. Charitable tax receipts will be issued for all donations and memberships.
We've also placed "Pennies for Puppies" donation tins throughout the area, a great way to unload your spare change!
Sponsorship Opportunities
We welcome your sponsorship support for the development and maintenance of Howler's Corners!
As a sponsor, your name or logo will be included on a sign situated just outside of the entrance of the off-leash park, providing you with exposure to both off-leash park users and others using the trail which passes the entrance. Click here to see a sign mock-up (PDF, 350 KB).
We are also providing additional sponsorship opportunities and recognition to support the development and/or purchase of the following:
- Benches
- Calming areas
- Planting of large shade trees
- Dog waste bag stands
- Sections of the fencing
For more information about sponsorship please contact Robbin Savage at 705.328.0472 ext. 932 or rsavage@jhscklh.on.ca.
Fundraising and construction update - as of Nov 2011
We've received a lot of great support for Howler's Corners. With great help from the John Howard Sociey of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton, we have raised over $5,000, and are half way to our fundraising goal! Thank-you to everyone who has made a donation and offered words of encouragement and suggestions. If you would like to make a donation, please click here.
We have cleared brush from the site, graded, and developed trails, and installed the fence.
We'd like to thank Giant Tiger, Kawartha Lakes Honda, Omemee Veterinary Hospital, Ruff Cuts, Three Island Vet Services, as well as the Kawartha Conservation Board of Directors, for their support. An extra special thanks goes to Arboristic Tree Care Services and Hoek Van Holland Landscaping for very generous donations of work and equipment, and to the John Howard Society of Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton for the many the many volunteer hours they have contributed.
