Oak Ridges Moraine Watershed Planning

Planning Area

The areas that we are completing plans for include only the watesheds draining northward off of the Oak Ridges Moraine within our jurisdiction, in Durham Region (see map below). These watersheds include the Nonquon River, unnamed southern Lake Scugog tributaries, Blackstock Creek, and East Cross Creek.

While the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan only requires planning for the tributaries draining off of the moraine, Durham Region has broadened the scope of this project to include areas within these watersheds not specifically originating on the moraine, in order to provide a more comprehensive planning document.

Nonquon River Watershed

The Nonquon River watershed encompasses 194.43 km2 of land that drains northward and eastward into the western portion of Lake Scugog, which in turn flows northward and into the chain of lakes known as the Kawartha Lakes.

The Oak Ridges Moraine exists within the southern portion of the Nonquon River Watershed, encompassing approximately 27.85 km2, or 14.3% of the watershed.

Southern Lake Scugog Tributaries Watershed

The Southern Lake Scugog Tributaries Watershed encompasses 84.96 km2 of land that drains northward into the Osler Marsh, which in turn flows northward and into the chain of lakes known as the Kawartha Lakes.

The Oak Ridges Moraine exists within the southern portion of the Southern Lake Scugog Tributaries Watershed, encompassing approximately 19.32 km2, or 22.7% of the watershed.

Blackstock Creek Watershed

The Blackstock Creek watershed encompasses 37.87 km2 of land that drains northward and eastward into the south-western portion of Lake Scugog.

The Oak Ridges Moraine exists within the southern portion of the Blackstock Creek Watershed, encompassing approximately 11.93 km2, or 31.5% of the watershed.

East Cross Creek Subwatershed

The extent of the study area includes lands that exist within the East Cross Creek watershed upstream of where Janetville Creek enters the main channel of East Cross Creek. The East Cross Creek subwatershed encompasses 78.85 km2 of land that drains northward and westward into the Scugog River, just downstream of Lake Scugog.

The Oak Ridges Moraine exists within the southern portion of the East Cross Creek Subwatershed, encompassing approximately 32.25 km2, or 40.9% of the watershed.
