Shoreline Naturalization

The Shoreline Naturalization Program was initiated in 2002 as a result of growing concern over the urbanization of our shoreline properties. The program is designed to encourage private and public land stewardship of our natural resources and provide educational opportunities across the watershed. It has four components:
- Demonstrations sites
- Community Workshops, Conferences, and Speaking Engagements
- Shoreline Consultations
- Private Landowner Implementation
Each works to further the goals of shoreline naturalization in a different way. Demonstrations sites allow shoreline restoration work on municipal properties and the opportunity to train others in the best naturalization practices. These projects also allow us to test different techniques and products before suggesting them to landowners. Workshops, conferences and speaking engagements enable a large number of people to be educated and impacted using minimal staff. Shoreline consultations provide motivated landowners with information specific to their property and an action plan that encourages implementation. The Private Landowner Implementation portion of the program provides financial assistance and labour to landowners who would like to naturalize their shoreline.
