Groundwater Monitoring
Millions of people in Ontario rely on groundwater for use in their homes, farms and businesses. Groundwater is hidden in aquifers just below the earth’s surface. This valuable resource can be tapped from private or municipally owned wells, each equally susceptible to becoming contaminated. Spills or careless activities that happen too close to wellheads can affect the groundwater and even surface waters many kilometres away. Once polluted, groundwater is very difficult, if not impossible to treat.
Kawartha Conservation monitors municipal groundwater wells throughout our watershed through our own watershed initiatives, partnership projects, and provincial programs. The information gathered provides a baseline enabling us to detect early indications of changes in water quality or quantity.
