What is the Scugog WATER Fund?

The Scugog WATER Fund was established in 2007 to provide financial assistance to residents of the Township of Scugog who undertake projects that contribute to the health of Lake Scugog. It is administered by us and is funded by the Township of Scugog. WATER stands for Water And Terrain Environmental Restoration.

Analysis of three years of water sampling data collected through the Lake Scugog Environmental Management Plan is showing that a significant amount of the lake's phosphorous and nitrogen loading is a result of private land uses in the watershed.

The goal of the Scugog WATER Fund is to address issues affecting Lake Scugog including:

• Extensive erosion on lakeshores and stream banks
• Leaking septic systems around the lake
• Agricultural run-off
• Manure storage, milk house waste water, cropland erosion
• Extensive fertilizer and pesticide use
• Livestock access to watercourses

Eligible expenses and grant ceilings

Projects will be evaluated on their potential to positively affect the health of the Lake Scugog watershed.
• Acceptable expenses would include all materials used on the project.
• Landowners can use their time and equipment as in-kind contribution to the project.
• We will be happy to assist landowners with project applications.

Eligible projects

The following categories of projects are eligible for funding:

• Beneficial Management Practice (BMPs)
  • Alternate watering system
  • Fencing of livestock from direct water access
  • Stream buffers/ naturalization
• Erosion Control
  • Riparian areas (area surrounding
    watercourses up to a distance of
    30 metres from the water)
• Private Septic Systems
  • Upgrades to existing septics within
    100 metres of surface water only
• Clean Water Diversion
  • Eavestroughing
  • Ditching
  • Berms
  • Filter strips
• Well Decommissioning
  • Any well that is abandoned or in the process of being retired
• Well Upgrades
  • Well caps, annular seals or other maintenance items that will help protect groundwater
• Manure Storage
  • Concrete pads
  • New structures
  • Repairs / upgrades to current structures
