Nonquon River Subwatershed Plan
The quality of life that we enjoy is greatly affected by the health of the natural ecosystems around us. As our communities grow, the potential for cumulative environmental impacts from development increases. In recognition of this, the Township of Scugog and Regional Municipality of Durham, in partnership with Kawartha Conservation, initiated a planning study for the Nonquon River Subwatershed as part of the municipal land use planning process.
The Nonquon River Subwatershed Study was undertaken to satisfy the requirements of Ontario's Planning Act, which provides a framework for integrating ecological and environmental concerns into the land use planning process. The outcome of this study was a Subwatershed Plan with recommended management strategies that provide a broad framework for protecting, maintaining and enhancing the important environmental features, resources and functions unique to the Nonquon River basin. Implementing the Plan will ensure that future development will harmonize the community's need for housing, industry and services with the need for sustaining the long-term health of the environment.
The recommended Subwatershed Plan consists of six management strategies. They are:
- Hazard Land Management
- Natural Heritage and Environmental Protection
- Groundwater Quality and Quantity Management
- Rehabilitation, Restoration and Improvement Measures
- Agricultural and Rural Land Management
- Urban Stormwater Management
The Plan's implementation will help:
- identify acceptable land uses
- provide targets for mitigating development pressures
- provide recommendations for effective resource management.
