Scugog WATER Fund
What is the Scugog WATER Fund?
The Scugog WATER Fund was established in 2007 to provide financial assistance to property owners who undertake projects that contribute to the health of Lake Scugog within the area where the Kawartha Conservation watershed overlaps the Region of Durham. It is administered by Kawartha Conservation and is funded by the Region of Durham. WATER stands for Water And Terrain Environmental Restoration.
Analysis of three years of water sampling data collected through the Lake Scugog Environmental Management Plan is showing that a significant amount of the lake's phosphorous and nitrogen loading is a result of private land uses in the watershed.
The goal of the Scugog WATER Fund is to address issues affecting Lake Scugog including:
- Extensive erosion on lakeshores and stream banks
- Leaking septic systems around the lake
- Agricultural run-off
- Manure storage, milk house waste water, cropland erosion
- Extensive fertilizer and pesticide use
- Livestock access to watercourses
