Student Summer Job Opportunities

Conservation Areas Assistant
Full Time, 40 hours per week
May 4 - August 29, 2026
$18.10 per hour, $19.10 per hour for returning students: Competition Closes February 20, 2026

The position

This position is responsible for supporting the advancement of the Conservation Lands programs including property maintenance, trail management and development, planting and monitoring restoration projects, general property maintenance, invasive species control, infrastructure improvements, and contributing to the strategic goals and advancement of the department.

Responsibilities include

Possess the knowledge and experience relevant to the responsibilities of the position; identify knowledge gaps and seek out professional development; engage in continuing education and professional networks that elevate your expertise; utilize your expertise in the key functions of your position; transfer knowledge to contribute to the success of others; enhance and advance your professional career. 

Apply your expertise in the following responsibilities:

  • Assist with daily property maintenance of five conservation areas. This includes mowing, trail trimming, landscaping, maintaining facility and property cleanliness.
  • Support habitat restoration projects on Conservation Lands. This will include planting species at risk, managing invasive species, weekly tending activities and the monitoring and reporting aspects of restoration projects.
  • Assist with the repair and maintenance of infrastructure. This will include repairing boardwalks, washrooms, and installing signage amongst other projects.
  • Implement a suite of trail maintenance activities. This will include aspects of trail decommissioning, trail creation, and ongoing trail maintenance.

Required Knowledge/Expertise/Skills

  • Enrollment in a post-secondary institution in environmental sciences or similar programs
  • Experience and knowledge of conservation areas/parks/trail maintenance and design
  • Knowledge of native flora and fauna
  • Demonstrated understanding of restoration techniques for SAR including grassland birds, wetlands, and Butternut trees.
  • Mechanical aptitude an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of equipment such as tractors, mowers, and other power equipment.
  • Carpentry, grounds maintenance, and small power equipment skills and experience and asset.
  • Demonstrated understanding of safety procedures and knowledge of the safe use of equipment.
  • Demonstrated Client services and teamwork skills.
  • Valid Chainsaw Certification an asset.
  • Valid Class G driver’s license within the Province of Ontario and held in good standing.
  • First aid certification an asset.

Communications Technologist

The position

The successful candidate will support Kawartha Conservation through content creation, digital storytelling, and communications support for watershed programs, community events and special initiatives.

Responsibilities include

The Communication Technologist provides hands-on communications support across digital platforms, helping to share Kawartha Conservation’s work with the community through engaging, accessible, and accurate content. Responsibilities include:

  • Create social media content for Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, X, and YouTube including captions, graphics, videos, and short-form reels.
  • Assist in developing content for seasonal campaigns such as tree planting, watershed education, conservation area programming, stewardship initiatives, and special events.
  • Capture photography and short video clips at conservation areas, project sites, community events, and staff activities.
  • Edit and format digital content for web, social media, and newsletters.
  • Draft articles for the Watershed Watch Newsletter, website features, and community updates.
  • Assist with media release drafting and supporting materials as required.
  • Support website content updates using the content management system.
  • Assist with community engagement promotions including event listings, digital posters, and campaign schedules.
  • Contribute to environmental storytelling projects including interviews, project features, and impact stories.
  • Assist with basic media monitoring and content performance tracking.
  • Organize digital photos, video files, and content assets according to established file management systems.
  • Support accessibility compliance by adding captions, alt-text, and accessible formatting to content.
  • Participate in team meetings, project planning discussions, and training sessions.
  • Complete special communications projects as assigned to support organizational priorities.

Required Knowledge/Expertise/Skills

  • Post-secondary education in journalism, public relations, photography and/or videography, or related field
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Knowledge of environmental initiatives and programs at Kawartha Conservation
  • Solid knowledge, understanding and demonstrated use of social media applications
  • Excellent organizational, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Good working knowledge of software applications especially Microsoft Office and Teams
  • Familiarity with website and social media analytic tools
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics an asset
  • Familiarity with Google AdWords an asset
  • Effective communication skills with individuals at all levels of an organization
  •  An enthusiastic team player
  • Valid M.T.O. driver’s license with a clean driving record

Environmental Field Technician
Full Time, 35 hours per week

The position

The successful candidate will support the Integrated Watershed Management team to deliver across the program areas of water quality, water quantity, groundwater monitoring, biomonitoring, and our special projects on behalf of our municipal partners.

Responsibilities include

Possess the knowledge and experience relevant to the responsibilities of the position; identify knowledge gaps and seek out professional development; engage in continuing education and professional networks that elevate your expertise; utilize your expertise in the key functions of your position; transfer knowledge to contribute to the success of others; enhance and advance your professional career. Apply your expertise in the following responsibilities:

  • Support and assist with water quality field sampling and analysis, including use of YSI multiparameter probe.
  • Support and assist with stream discharge/base flow measurements including data analysis.
  • Collect and document field data, translating information and inputting the data into spreadsheet/database programs.
  • Support with assessment of stream, fisheries, and other aquatic site conditions.
  • Support and assist with technical training and educational events and material.
  • Occasional communication with the public.
  • Exemplary client and customer service delivery.
  • Support other departments and programs as requested. 

Required Knowledge/Expertise/Skills

  • Attendance or graduation from a university or college in areas such as Water Quality, Limnology, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, or other Environmental Science.
  • Experience or working knowledge in a variety of relevant field sampling techniques and monitoring protocols related to water quality and/or quantity.
  • Knowledge of natural water quality principles and local issues. 
    Understanding of safety procedures and knowledge of use of field equipment.
  • Experience of preparing reports for non-technical audiences.
    Knowledge of fluvial geomorphology/hydrology would be an asset.
  • Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network and Ontario Stream Assessment Protocol qualifications an asset.
  • Fish & wildlife and native vegetation identification skills would be an asset.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications including spreadsheet and databases.
  • Valid Class G driver’s license within the Province of Ontario and held in good standing.
  • Pleasure Craft Operators Card an asset.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification, or ability to obtain prior to employment.
