Experience the Trails in a New Way with the Launch of the Talking Forest App

Lindsay, ON – Kawartha Conservation is inviting visitors to experience nature in an entirely new way through the launch of the Talking Forest app - an innovative, interactive tool that blends technology with nature to create a deeper connection to the outdoors.

Developed in collaboration with Ampere, the redeveloped app guides users through a self-directed experience along the Woodland Loop and Marsh Lookout trails at Ken Reid Conservation Area. Using GPS-based storytelling, the app activates as visitors move through the trail, sharing engaging audio stories and insights about the trees, wildlife, and history that make the area special.

“The Talking Forest brings a new level of engagement to our trails,” said Melissa Creasy-Alexander, Coordinator, Conservation Lands. “It’s a fun, interactive way to learn more about the ecosystems that surround you and to connect with nature in a meaningful way.”

The Talking Forest app was created as part of Kawartha Conservation’s commitment to enhancing visitor experiences and promoting environmental education through innovation. The app offers a modern way to explore familiar trails, combining storytelling and science to highlight the diversity and importance of local natural spaces.

“Each story you hear along the trail adds to the experience of being outdoors,” said Carolyn Snider, Community Engagement Technician. “It’s an opportunity to slow down, listen, and appreciate how everything in the forest is connected.”

The app currently features 14 interactive stations along the Woodland Loop and Marsh Lookout trails at Ken Reid Conservation Area, as well as 11 interactive points along the Loop Trail at Windy Ridge Conservation Area, with plans to expand to additional Conservation Areas in the coming months.

The Talking Forest app is free to download on both Android and iOS devices. Visitors are encouraged to download the app before their visit, turn on location services, and enjoy a hands-free storytelling adventure while exploring the trails.
