Kawartha Conservation Statement on Provincial Announcement Regarding Conservation Authority Modernization

LINDSAY, ONTARIO - As the Province of Ontario considers changes to the Conservation Authority framework, Kawartha Conservation continues to provide essential services that protect people, property, and the environment.

For more than four decades, Kawartha Conservation has worked alongside municipal, provincial, and community partners to reduce the impacts of flooding and natural hazards, support sustainable growth, and advance watershed science and environmental stewardship across the Kawartha watershed.

“We remain committed to the important work we do every day, protecting our lakes, rivers, and wetlands, and supporting resilient, thriving communities,” said Mark Majchrowski, Chief Administrative Officer of Kawartha Conservation. “Our focus continues to be on service excellence, watershed-based science, and collaboration.”

Kawartha Conservation has invested significantly in digital modernization and process improvement since the launch of a fully online permitting system that was introduced in 2020, resulting in reduced turnaround times and improved customer experience. The organization consistently meets or exceeds provincial permitting timelines, helping to support housing and infrastructure development while maintaining environmental protection and public safety.

“As we learn more about the Province’s proposed approach, we look forward to participating in upcoming consultations and sharing the experience and expertise that Conservation Authorities have developed over many decades,” added Majchrowski. “We believe that effective watershed management, grounded in science and local knowledge, is essential to supporting strong communities and sustainable development.”

Kawartha Conservation will continue to deliver its full range of watershed management, source water protection, and stewardship programs throughout this process, maintaining its commitment to protecting and enhancing the natural systems that support communities and economies across the Kawartha region.
