Kawartha Conservation’s Fall Native Native Plant Sale Now Open
KAWARTHA WATERSHED - Kawartha Conservation’s 2026 Fall Native Plant Sale will run from August 10 to August 31, offering residents a limited opportunity to purchase native plants that can reduce maintenance, improve soil stability, support pollinators, and strengthen their properties.
Orders will be available for pick-up on Friday, September 11.
Native plants are adapted to local soil and climate conditions, making them a practical choice for homeowners and landowners looking to create attractive landscapes that require less watering and ongoing care once established.
They can also help absorb rainwater, reduce erosion, improve shoreline stability, and provide food and shelter for birds, bees, butterflies, and other wildlife.
“Fall is an excellent time to establish native plants because the soil is still warm, while cooler air temperatures place less stress on new growth,” says Kawartha Conservation Stewardship Technician Julia Derue. “That allows plants to focus on developing strong roots before winter and gives them a head start the following spring.”
The sale will feature native plants suited to a range of properties and landscaping goals, including gardens, shorelines, wet areas, pollinator habitat, privacy plantings, and areas where additional tree or shrub cover is needed.
For landowners, planting native species can mean a healthier landscape that is better able to withstand drought, heavy rainfall, and changing weather conditions. It can also help prevent the gradual loss of habitat, healthy soil, and natural shoreline protection.
“Small planting projects can make a noticeable difference on an individual property,” says Derue. “When those efforts are repeated across the watershed, they help reconnect habitat, protect water quality, and build a more resilient landscape.”
Fall planting also allows plants to benefit from seasonal moisture and cooler temperatures. With proper planting and care, roots can continue to grow until the ground freezes, preparing plants for stronger growth the following year.
Quantities will be limited, and popular selections may sell out before the sale closes. Early ordering is encouraged.
