Under current weather conditions, the snowpack will start melting, producing substantial runoff. As the current watershed capacity to absorb the expected snowmelt is limited, the water levels and flows in local rivers will increase over the next 3 days.
The Provincial Surface Water Monitoring Centre (SWMC) is tracking a significant weather system that is expected to pass through our jurisdiction over the next few days. Precipitation, up to 15 mm of rainfall followed by 15 cm of snow, is forecasted for the Kawartha region starting on the evening of Wednesday February 15, 2022, through to Friday February 17th, 2022.
Another significant weather system is expected to travel through southern Ontario, including the Kawartha Conservation watershed, today and tomorrow. The system will bring a brief warm-up, up to 7°C, and precipitation, that will start as freezing rain around noon today and will turn into rain later this afternoon.
Under current weather conditions, the remaining snow will continue melting with increased intensity. The watercourses will continue responding with further increases in water levels and flows, reaching or exceeding their banks.
Environment Canada forecasts that the daytime air temperatures during the next 5 days will remain above the freezing mark, returning to below-freezing overnight. Additionally, mixed precipitation, including up to 10 cm of snow are expected today.
