Septic Systems and Wells
Septic systems
Many residents in the Kawartha watershed rely on septic systems to manage their household wastewater. If built to current-day standards and maintained properly, a septic system can enhance the value of your property.
Good septic system management reduces the risk of leaching to groundwater, rivers and lakes; and helps to minimize the risk of drinking water contamination and degradation of aquatic habitats.
If you are looking to install a septic system, you may need a permit from us.
Wells
Many rural landowners in the Kawartha watershed rely on groundwater from dug or drilled wells for their private water supply. If you own your own well, you are responsible for it. You must make sure it is constructed to provincial standards. You must also arrange to have your water tested regularly. Your health, and the health of your family, is dependent on clean, safe water.
We can help
Managing your own well or septic system can be challenging. If you have questions or concerns about your septic system or well, contact Kawartha Conservation. We can provide information and educational guides, as well as assist with grant applications to support septic system and well management projects on your property, such as upgrades and decommissions.
