JUNE 10, 2022 – The Lake Scugog Enhancement Project has received a financial boost of nearly $700,000 through Environment and Climate Change Canada for the development of a constructed wetland in Port Perry Bay, at Lake Scugog’s southern end.

The funds secured through Kawartha Conservation, totalling $692,690 and provided through the Nature Smart Climate Solution Fund in collaboration with Conservation Ontario, will help combat climate change and improve water quality through the wetland construction and installation of stormwater management infrastructure.

“Aside from providing vital habitat for a variety of plants and animals, wetlands naturally capture and store carbon beneath the ground, which helps reduce the impacts of climate change,” explained Tanner Liang, Kawartha Conservation’s Water Quality Specialist. “Further, the installation of oil and grit separators to manage stormwater will lead to improved water quality going into Lake Scugog.”

The Nature Smart Climate Solution Fund aims to restore, conserve, and enhance wetland and grassland ecosystems across the country, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing habitat for wildlife.

The wetland project is a collaborative effort between Kawartha Conservation, the Township of Scugog and the Scugog Lake Stewards as part of the Lake Scugog Enhancement Project, an environmental and recreational improvement project for the Port Perry Bay that positively impacts the entire lake and local communities.

“We’re thrilled that we were able to secure funding for the project and can continue to make enhancements to Lake Scugog for years to come,” continued Tanner. “The amount of support we’ve seen from partner organizations and the local community really highlights the value in protecting the future of our lakes.”
