Back to SearchOCTOBER 7, 2022 – Available now and for the entire month of October, visitors to Ken Reid Conservation Area can read ‘Over in the Forest’, the newly featured story along the Story Walk Trail.
Written by Marianne Berkes, ‘Over in the Forest’ takes readers on a journey throughout the forest, exploring the lives of beavers, deer, turtles, birds, and other woodland animals. With colourful illustrations, clever rhyming schemes and simple counting exercises, readers can play a fun game of hide-and-seek with different animals on every single page.
“Over in the forest where the clean waters run, lived a busy mother beaver and her little kit one,” reads a page from the story. “‘Build,’ said the mother. ‘I build’ said the one. So they helped build a lodge where the clean waters run.”
Nestled amongst the natural beauty of Ken Reid Conservation Area, the Story Walk Trail is a fantastic place to discover new stories and revisit personal favourites, explore the outdoors, and connect with loved ones in a serene environment. Made possible through a collaboration with the Kawartha Lakes Public Library, visitors are treated to a new story each month as part of an initiative to facilitate a love for learning and a love for the environment throughout the community.
“There’s no better place to read a story about woodland animals than in the very place that they call home,” said Melissa Creasy-Alexander, Conservation Lands Technician. “Being in nature and walking amongst the fall colours, spending time with family, and learning something new along the way, makes for a truly unforgettable experience.”

The Story Walk is located along the Pond Loop Trail at Ken Reid Conservation Area, adjacent to the main parking lot and off-leash dog park. Visitors can park at Ken Reid Conservation Area for $4 a day per vehicle.
