Back to SearchMARCH 17, 2023 – Visitors to Ken Reid Conservation Area can once again read ‘The Gruffalo’ as it makes its second appearance along the Story Walk Trail for the month of March.
Written by Julia Donaldson, ‘The Gruffalo’ follows the journey of a small mouse as it takes a stroll through the deep, dark woods. Stopped by various hungry animals along the way, the mouse must think quickly to avoid being eaten for lunch. Telling the tale of a wild and dangerous beast on the loose, the mouse is able to scare off its predators, but eventually comes face-to-face with the beast itself.
“But who is this creature with terrible claws and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws?” reads a page from the story. “His eyes are orange, his tongue is black; he has purple prickles all over his back. It’s a gruffalo!”
The Story Walk Trail at Ken Reid Conservation Area is made possible through a partnership with the Kawartha Lakes Public Library, who provide a new story to be featured along the trail each month. Combining education, exploration, and time spent with loved ones, the Story Walk Trail offers the perfect opportunity for children to develop their reading skills in a comfortable and natural environment.
“The Story Walk Trail allows children to be creative and experience the stories in their own way,” said Calli Burke, Conservation Lands Technician. “With spring weather on the horizon and adventure calling your name, now is the perfect time to get out on the trails with friends and family and enjoy all that Ken Reid Conservation Area has to offer.”
The Story Walk is located along the Pond Trail at Ken Reid Conservation Area, adjacent to the main parking lot and off-leash dog park. Visitors can park at Ken Reid Conservation Area for $4 per day and are reminded to dress for the spring weather.
