Watershed Conditions Statement - Flood Outlook - March 14
Posted on Thursday, June 16, 2022 10:36 AM
Under current weather conditions, the snowpack will start melting, producing substantial runoff. As the current watershed capacity to absorb the expected snowmelt is limited, the water levels and flows in local rivers will increase over the next 3 days. Rivers are expected to reach or exceed their banks; water is likely to accumulate in low-lying areas, areas with poor drainage, road ditches. Small watercourses will be quick to respond, while larger rivers will take longer to start rising.

Under current weather conditions, the remaining snow will continue melting with increased intensity. The watercourses will continue responding with further increases in water levels and flows, reaching or exceeding their banks. Some nuisance flooding due to accumulation of water in low-lying areas, areas with poor drainage, road ditches can be expected. However, no widespread flooding problems are anticipated at this time.

Environment Canada forecasts that the daytime air temperatures during the next 5 days will remain above the freezing mark, returning to below-freezing overnight. Additionally, mixed precipitation, including up to 10 cm of snow are expected today. In these conditions, the snowpack will continue melting very gradually, sustaining, but not increasing the elevated water levels in local rivers and streams. No flooding problems are expected at this time.
